National Horse Day!

Today we pay tribute to the majestic animals that have impacted our history and culture.

The Choctaw horse is among the Colonial Spanish Mustangs named the Heritage Horse of Oklahoma and listed as critically endangered.

Our Chahta Horse print series is of the Rickman foundation herd and includes Choctaw purebred. These purebreds are well documented as descendants of those brought across the Trail of Tears.

At the time these photos were taken there were less than 300 Choctaw purebred. These Choctaw purebreds are located around Antlers, Oklahoma. They are privately owned and preserved with the support of volunteer groups.

“I had the opportunity of going up in the Kiamichi mountains to capture a rare glimpse of their beauty. By releasing this print series, I hope to bring awareness to these remnants of living treasures invaluable to our Choctaw history and culture.” – Lynda Kay Sawyer

Dr. Phillip Sponenberg, Professor of Pathology and Genetics at Virginia Tech University documented the Choctaw horses’ lineage.
